In early life he learned the trade of wagon ironing, and followed that business several years; then in the stage and livery business several years, afterwards, contractor in construction of N. Y. C. R. R., the Ohio and Miss., and other roadsin Indiana, prior to 1861; was employed several years building enlargements of the Erie Canal. He was engaged with his son in the lime and plaster business, Manlius, 1867-87
